Odessa Flowers Obituary

Odessa Flowers, who honed skills as a homemaker that served her well in her secretarial career, passed away on March 17, 2024. She was 83 years old.

Born on February 16, 1941 to Zula Ruby Johnson and James Walton, she graduated from Frazier High School in Covington, Tennessee in 1959, serving as secretary of her class. After moving to Detroit in the early 1960s with her mother and stepfather, Lawrence Wilson, she married fellow native Tennessean William Eddie-Jones “Bill” Flowers in 1963.

The couple raised a son and four daughters. After her children entered school, she began her secretarial career, taking on a series of positions with Detroit Public Schools. The skills she cultivated as a homemaker were critical to the success she enjoyed in her career. In both roles, she was organized, efficient,timely, detail-oriented and thorough.

Odessa gave her life to Christ in her early 20s while attending Delmar Street Church of God in Christ (COGIC) in Detroit, under the leadership of the late Bishop Robert Hill.  She later served as secretary during her longtime membership at Kendall Gospel Temple COGIC. Years later, she and her children joined Miller Memorial COGIC, where she served as a missionary on the church and district levels, a deaconess and was an active member of the Women’s Department. Most recently, she was a beloved church mother at Pentecostal Temple COGIC, which she joined under the leadership of the late Bishop Isaac King Jr.

Left to celebrate Odessa Flowers’ memory are her son, Kevin Flowers (Angelia); her daughters, Allison Cohen, Marian Morris (Vince), Damisa Jackson (James) and Rhonda Quin; her half-brother, Michael Walton; her sister-in-law, Georgia Snipes; three nieces, a nephew, thirteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, who passed away three weeks to the day before she did; her parents, stepfather and granddaughter, Aron.
