Joanne Holland Obituary

Joanne Holland was born February 8, 1936 to the late Tom Morris Scales and Helen Virginia Johnson of Fieldale, VA. She was raised by Jess and Pearl Schoefield in Baltimore, MD where she attended school.

From childhood, Joanne faithfully read her Bible, prayed and attended church.  She spent her early years enjoying life.   She was fun, adventurous and outgoing.   She was known for shopping and wearing the newest fashions. People admired her beauty and style.

While visiting her biological mother and siblings in Virginia, Joanne met the love of her life, Cleve Jordan Holland. The couple moved to Detroit, Michigan and married.   To this union was born Cleavis Vanessa and Cleopatrick.   Joanne was a wonderful homemaker who enjoyed celebrating holidays and birthdays. She passed this legacy of enjoying celebrations to her family whom she deeply loved.

Joanne was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church under Rev. William C. Ardrey on Dexter in Detroit. Despite this, she suffered from depression due to several traumatic life events, including the loss of her infant son Cleopatrick.

God was good and merciful to Joanne.  She re-dedicated her life to Christ nine years ago during a revival organized by her family and friends on the street where she and her husband lived. Several years later, she suffered serious health issues resulting in her husband’s inability to continue to care for her. Unfortunately, the decision had to be made to move her to a nursing home where she was called home to be with the Lord on the afternoon of June 26th.

Joanne leaves to cherish her memory her loving and devoted husband, Cleve Jordan Holland, daughter Cleavis Vanessa Thrasher (Lenear); grandchildren, Jeneace A. Burrell (Terrance), Angeline N. Thrasher, Gabrielle S. Ellison (Andre’), Danielle J. Thrasher, Cleveland L. Thrasher (Samantha), Katherine I. Thrasher; great-grandchildren, Arin R. Burrell, Braylon E. Solomon, Landon L. Haliburton (aka Baby Jordan); sisters, Gladys Willis, Marie Vaughn, Betty J. Francis (Joseph), Barbara Murray; brother Charles Hairston (Paula); sister-in-law Wanda S. Green (Herman); brother-in-law John Wooten and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, caregivers and friends. In addition to her parents and son, she was preceded in death by her sisters Doris Wooten, Carolyn Leach, Juanita Hairston and brother Ronald Hairston.  We will all miss that sweet little voice that would close phone calls with “Love You”.
